Choosing a raccoon trap
Most raccoon traps are rectangular cage traps with a trip plate near the back. When you compare options, these choices matter most:
- Size. The trap must let an adult raccoon walk fully onto the trip plate and turn its body inside. Undersized traps lead to escapes and injuries.
- Single or double door. Single-door traps are simpler and tend to catch wary animals because the bait sits in a closed end. Double-door traps let animals see through, which helps along fences and runways.
- Wire and mesh. Heavier wire and smaller mesh openings resist bending and reaching through, which matters for strong, dexterous animals like raccoons.
- Finish. Galvanized or coated wire resists rust in outdoor use.
- Handle and guard. A hand guard keeps the carrier’s hand away from the animal.

Is a single-door or double-door trap better for raccoons?
Both work. Single-door traps put the bait in a closed end, which suits cautious animals. Double-door traps are open at both ends, so animals walk in more readily along fences and runways. Many distributors stock both.
