Short answer: for TNR, choose a 79 cm or 94 cm trap with 2.5 cm mesh, doors that lock once closed, a handle with a hand guard, and a design that folds flat. Buy enough to trap a whole colony in one or two nights.

What a TNR trap needs
- The right size. 79×28×33 cm suits most adult cats; 94×34×37 cm gives more room for large toms. Both use 2.5 mm wire.
- Small mesh. 2.5×2.5 cm mesh keeps kittens in and paws safe.
- Locking doors. Once the doors close they lock on the frame, so a frightened cat cannot push its way out on the way to the clinic.
- Safe carrying. A handle with a hand guard keeps fingers away from the cat.
- Storage. Folding traps take far less space in a car or a shelter store room.
Single or double door for cats?
Both work. A double-door trap looks open, which helps with trap-shy cats. A single-door trap lets volunteers place bait against the closed end. Many groups keep some of each.
How many traps?
Plan roughly one trap per cat you expect to catch on the trapping night, plus a few spares. Trapping a colony at once reduces the chance that cats become trap-shy after seeing others caught.
