How to Bait and Set a Raccoon Cage Trap

Short answer: use a trap of at least 79 cm, place it on a flat path the raccoon already uses, put bait behind the trip plate, and check the trap at least once a day.

1. Choose the right trap

Raccoons are strong and good with their paws. Use the 79×28×33 cm size for most animals and 94×34×37 cm for large adults. Both are 2.5 mm wire with 2.5 cm mesh. See our raccoon traps.

2. Pick a spot

  • Along a route the raccoon already uses: near bins, a shed, a deck or a gap under a fence.
  • On flat, firm ground so the trap does not rock. A rocking trap makes raccoons cautious.
  • In shade if possible, so a caught animal does not overheat.

3. Bait it

Common raccoon baits are sweet or smelly foods such as marshmallows, canned fish or cat food. Place the bait on the far side of the trip plate so the raccoon has to step on the plate to reach it. A small trail of bait leading to the entrance helps.

4. Set and test

Raise the door, hook the latch rod and press the trip plate lightly by hand (keep fingers clear) to check the door drops cleanly. Then reset it. On a double-door trap, set both doors.

5. After a catch

  • Check the trap daily; many places require this by law.
  • Cover the trap with a cloth to calm the animal.
  • Carry it by the handle with the hand guard, away from your body.
  • Release or relocate the animal only where local rules allow.

Once our doors close they lock on the frame, so a raccoon cannot push them open from inside.
