Short answer: pick a trap long enough that the whole animal, tail included, is past the trip plate before the doors close, and tall enough that it walks in without crouching. For most buyers that means 61 cm for rats, 66 cm for squirrels and rabbits, 79–94 cm for raccoons, feral cats and groundhogs, and 108 cm or larger for foxes, coyotes and dogs.
Our 7 sizes at a glance
All seven sizes are the same folding design made in proportion. The “typical use” column is our sizing judgement based on common North American practice, not a rule; local animal sizes vary.
| Size (L×W×H) | Wire | Mesh | Weight | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 61×18×21 cm (24×7×8 in) | 2 mm | 2.5×2.5 cm | 1.9 kg | Rats, chipmunks, small squirrels |
| 66×23×26 cm (26×9×10 in) | 2.5 mm | 2.5×2.5 cm | 3.2 kg | Squirrels, rabbits, mink |
| 79×28×33 cm (31×11×13 in) | 2.5 mm | 2.5×2.5 cm | 4.3 kg | Raccoons, feral cats, opossums, groundhogs |
| 94×34×37 cm (37×13×15 in) | 2.5 mm | 2.5×2.5 cm | 6 kg | Large raccoons, groundhogs, cats, foxes |
| 108×40×45 cm (43×16×18 in) | 3 mm | 5×5 cm | 8 kg | Foxes, beavers, large raccoons, small dogs |
| 130×45×50 cm (51×18×20 in) | 4 mm | 5×5 cm | 11.5 kg | Coyotes, medium dogs |
| 150×50×55 cm (59×20×22 in) | 4 mm | 5×5 cm | 19.5 kg | Large dogs, coyotes |
Three rules for choosing a size
- Length first. If the trap is too short, the animal can trigger the plate with its front feet while its back half is still in the doorway. When in doubt between two sizes, go one size up.
- Mesh matters for small animals. Rats and young squirrels can slip through wide mesh, so the small sizes use 2.5 cm mesh. The 108 cm size and larger use 5 cm mesh, which suits bigger animals.
- Heavier wire for strong animals. Wire goes from 2 mm on the smallest size to 4 mm on the 130 and 150 cm sizes, because coyotes and dogs push hard against the frame.

Double door or single door?
Our standard model has two doors. Animals see straight through the trap, so cautious species such as groundhogs and raccoons walk in more readily. A single-door version is available in every size; some buyers prefer it for feral cats because the bait sits against the closed end.
Sizes for a mixed range
Distributors and hardware stores often start with three sizes that cover most customer questions: 61 cm (rats), 79 cm (raccoons and cats) and 108 cm (foxes and small dogs). Pest-control companies usually add the 94 cm for large raccoons. See the full range on our cage traps page, or try our size calculator.
